Five rounds into the new regulations and the 2026 season has a shape: a Mercedes at the front, a 19-year-old in it, and everyone else arguing over the scraps. Andrea Kimi Antonelli has won four of the first five races and leads by 43 points. Monaco is where that kind of advantage goes to be tested, because Monte Carlo is the one weekend a year when the quickest car is only worth as much as the grid slot it converts.
Seventy-eight laps of a 3.337 km street circuit with barriers six inches off the racing line. One DRS zone, nineteen corners, and an overtake that costs more than it gains almost everywhere. The 2026 cars are narrower and lighter than the machines that made this place a procession, which is the most optimistic sentence anyone has written about racing at Monaco in a decade - but Saturday will still decide most of Sunday.
The championship
Four wins and three poles from five for Andrea Kimi Antonelli , and a Mercedes team 72 points clear of Ferrari. Canada was the messiest Sunday of the year - six retirements, George Russell and Lando Norris both out - and the championship leader still walked away with 25 more points. That is the pattern the chasers need broken, and Monaco has broken better patterns than this one.
What Monaco asks of the cars
Monaco inverts almost every priority of a normal weekend. Mechanical grip over aero: the average speed is the lowest of the season, so what matters is how the car rides kerbs and how much confidence it gives on turn-in at 30 mph, not how much load it makes at 180. Front-end bite: Loews is the slowest corner in Formula 1 and the swimming-pool complex the most commitment-dependent; a car that understeers is a car that finishes a second a lap adrift. Track position: with one DRS zone and no run-off, the pit lane decides more positions than the circuit does, and a safety car - Monaco averages more than most - can hand the race to whoever happened to be in the right window.
“Everywhere else you drive the corner. Here you drive the barrier, and the corner happens somewhere in between.”
The 2026 cars should help. Narrower bodywork and a shorter wheelbase mean more room to place the car through Massenet and the Nouvelle Chicane, and active aero has more effect at the low end of the speed range than DRS ever did. The honest expectation is still that Saturday afternoon settles it.
The storylines
Leclerc is third on 75 points and still without a win in 2026. Monaco is his home race, the place he has taken more poles than results, and the one circuit where a Ferrari that qualifies well cannot be driven around on Sunday. If Ferrari are going to interrupt the Mercedes run anywhere, it is here.
Four wins from five, 43 points clear, and a first Monaco Grand Prix in a car capable of winning it. Monte Carlo has ended more title-favourite weekends in a barrier than any other circuit on the calendar - and the leader has never raced an F1 car here in anger.
Fourth in the constructors’ on 57 points, Red Bull have spent five rounds looking short of downforce. Monaco asks for almost none of the kind they are missing. It is the best-shaped weekend they have had all year, and Verstappen is the driver on this grid most likely to convert one.
