Nineteen laps into the sprint era of the new regulations, and the format has already produced the best racing of 2026. The first sprint of the season went to George Russell from sprint pole - but not before the lead changed hands six times in five laps, a Ferrari nearly stole it at the flag, and the championship picture picked up its first real controversy.
The sprint
The fight at the front was not the one anyone predicted. It was Lewis Hamilton , from fourth on the grid, who took the lead at Turn 9 on the opening lap and traded it with George Russell six times in five laps - including one pass around the outside of Turn 8 - at a circuit he has won at six times. Russell settled it with a dive into the Turn 14 hairpin on lap 5 and broke away; Hamilton had used his tyres up in the fight and slipped back into the grasp of Charles Leclerc , who came past his new teammate on lap 8, wondering aloud on the radio whether Hamilton knew how wide the 2026 cars are.
A safety car on lap 13 - Nico Hülkenberg ‘s Audi stopped at Turn 1 with an engine failure, moments after Valtteri Bottas ‘s Cadillac lost power - set up a three-lap dash to the flag. Ferrari double-stacked for softs, Leclerc got wheelspin out of the hairpin at the lap-16 restart, and that was the margin: 0.674s at the line, chasing hard, never quite alongside. Russell admitted afterwards that Hamilton had caught him off guard in those opening laps.
Antonelli’s messy Saturday
The polesitter’s teammate had the sprint to forget. Andrea Kimi Antonelli bogged down from second on the grid, dropped to the back half of the top ten, and barged into Isack Hadjar ‘s Red Bull at Turn 4 on the opening lap - a 10-second penalty that dropped him out of the points after serving it in the safety-car pit sequence. He recovered to fifth, 5.688s back. It could have been worse; it should have been much better.
Behind, Liam Lawson and Oliver Bearman rolled the dice and stayed out under the safety car on their starting tyres, and the gamble held: seventh and eighth, with a recovering Max Verstappen on fresh rubber finishing 0.3s short of Bearman’s point. Ninth, from eighth on the grid, after struggling for revs at the launch - Verstappen called the Saturday a disaster, and the RB22’s weekend-long lack of grip is already the paddock’s biggest story. Alexander Albon started from the pit lane - the first of 2026 - after Williams broke parc fermé with a suspension change. Arvid Lindblad ’s afternoon was wrecked by an opening-lap spin; the RB rookie was pulled in before the safety car.
The championship
Eight points stretch George Russell ‘s perfect start - a win in Melbourne, now a sprint win in Shanghai - to an 11-point lead over Andrea Kimi Antonelli , with the Ferraris close enough to matter. On this evidence the 2026 cars can genuinely race each other, and windy-day tyre management is going to be a skill worth points all year.
The Chinese Grand Prix itself runs on Sunday. Qualifying is later today, and after that sprint, nobody at the front of this grid can claim to know the order.
