Fifty-two laps of Silverstone on Sunday, and the grandstands will be full of people cheering for someone who isn’t leading the championship. George Russell won last time out in Austria. Lewis Hamilton won the round before at Barcelona. Lando Norris drives for the team based twenty minutes up the road. Three British drivers arrive at their home race in form, and every one of them is chasing a 19-year-old Italian in the other Mercedes.
Silverstone is a home Grand Prix in the truest sense - the paddock empties into a car park most of the grid learned to race in. It is also a sprint weekend, which means one hour of practice, a sprint shootout on Friday evening, and 100 points-worth of racing across two days instead of one. For a title fight that already looks lopsided, that is a lot of extra scoreboard.
The championship

Two Mercedes at the top, and a 98-point wall between them and Ferrari. Russell’s win at Spielberg - from pole, leading home Verstappen and Antonelli - was the first time all year the number one Mercedes wasn’t the one in front. It closed the gap to the leader, but only to 40; Antonelli was third and still banking big scores on his weakest weekends. Behind the silver cars, Ferrari have the next-best package, with Hamilton now within six of Russell after his Barcelona breakthrough.
What Silverstone asks of the cars
Silverstone is the high-speed downforce test of the calendar. Fast-corner load: Copse, then the Maggotts-Becketts-Chapel complex, are taken at speeds that make or break a lap - a car that trusts the front end through direction changes gains half a second no straight can give back. Aero balance in transition: the sequence loads and unloads the tyre four times in five seconds, so a nervous rear is punished immediately. Tyre energy: the long, loaded corners put more lateral load through the fronts than almost anywhere, and a hot Sunday turns strategy into a management exercise. It is a circuit that rewards the two teams already at the front, and the McLaren is quietly one of the best cars here.

The sprint format sharpens everything. One practice hour to find a setup, then the results start counting almost straight away. Silverstone’s width and the 2026 active-aero package make it one of the better tracks to follow on, so qualifying out of position is survivable - but with eight extra sprint points on the table Saturday, nobody in the title fight can afford a quiet weekend.
The storylines
Russell and Hamilton arrive at Silverstone off back-to-back victories, both British, both with the home crowd behind them. The catch: they are second and third, chasing a Mercedes team-mate, and the win column this year belongs mostly to the man between them on the grid.
Norris, Piastri and Leclerc are separated by a single point in the tight fight for fourth. Silverstone should suit the McLaren more than most circuits - a home weekend is exactly where Norris needs to turn matched pace into a result.
Five wins, a 40-point lead, and a third place in Austria that still stretched it. The sprint format hands out extra points to whoever is fastest across the whole weekend, and all year that has been the teenager in the number two Mercedes.
