Ferrari had the pole. Mercedes had the race. On a bright Saturday morning at Silverstone, Lewis Hamilton lined up first for the sprint on home soil - the storybook grid slot in front of a home crowd that has wanted exactly this all season. Then the lights went out, and Andrea Kimi Antonelli took it away from him.
The championship leader started second, got ahead of the Ferrari, and drove away. By the flag it was 2.745s and never in question. Nineteen laps of the short sprint format, no safety cars, no drama at the front - just the 19-year-old confirming, again, that 2026 is his season and everyone else is racing for the scraps.
The sprint
Lewis Hamilton had done the hard part on Friday, beating the Mercedes to sprint pole in a Ferrari that has flattered to deceive all year. But the launch was Andrea Kimi Antonelli ‘s, the lead followed inside the opening laps, and from there the sprint became a demonstration. Eight points, the maximum on offer, and a Saturday that told the paddock nothing it did not already suspect.
The best drive belonged to Lando Norris . He started sixth, finished third, and was the only car in the top group to climb through it - past both the Verstappen Red Bull and his own team-mate to steal the last step of the podium. For a McLaren team that has spent a month watching Mercedes and Ferrari trade the front rows, six points from a sprint they qualified sixth for is the kind of Saturday that quietly matters.
Behind him George Russell came home fourth and Charles Leclerc fifth, the sister cars shadowing their leaders without the pace to trouble them. The weekend’s quiet loser was Max Verstappen , who lined up third and slid to sixth, picked off rather than picking others off - the wrong direction on a track where Red Bull needed a statement. Oscar Piastri took seventh from seventh, and Liam Lawson grabbed the final point in eighth for the RB team.
No retirements, a clean 22-car finish, only Lance Stroll and Sergio Pérez lapped at the back. A tidy sprint - and a tidy eight points onto a lead that was already the story of the season.
The championship
The eight points push Andrea Kimi Antonelli to 179 and stretch his cushion over George Russell back out to 43 - an all-Mercedes top two, with Lewis Hamilton a further four back in third after his sprint runner-up. The interesting shuffle is just behind: Lando Norris ‘s podium vaults him clear of the four-way midfield knot into fourth outright, ahead of Charles Leclerc , Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen , who are now covered by seven points for the last of the top places.
That is the whole 2026 season in one Saturday: a leader who converts every opportunity, a Mercedes lock at the front, and a compressed fight for the best-of-the-rest scraps behind them.
The British Grand Prix itself runs later on Sunday, 5 July - Hamilton starting from the front on home ground with a point to prove, and Antonelli looking to turn a perfect Saturday into a perfect weekend.
