The first sprint ever run at Zandvoort will also be the last, and it belonged to George Russell from the first metre. Sprint pole, a clean launch, and twenty-four laps of control around the dunes while a North Sea squall stalked the circuit and arrived, obligingly, just as he took the flag. His third sprint win of 2026 - no one else has more than one - and his own verdict was honest: one more lap of rain and it might have been a very different story.
The sprint
On a circuit where the preview called overtaking a qualifying problem, the sprint mostly agreed. The exception was Charles Leclerc , who made the move of the race on lap 18 - by the soft-tyred Ferrari on Lando Norris ‘s McLaren into Turn 1 - and pulled away to finish 1.360s behind Russell. Andrea Kimi Antonelli spent the final lap filling Norris’s mirrors into Tarzan but couldn’t make the podium spot stick; he’d been carrying floor damage since a trip through the SQ1 gravel on Friday, which made fourth a decent salvage. Oscar Piastri held off Max Verstappen for fifth, the home crowd roaring a sixth place like a podium.
The stand-in seats told quieter stories. Liam Lawson finished eleventh on his first Red Bull start, exactly where he began; Yuki Tsunoda , back in an RB race seat, was thirteenth. Nico Hülkenberg ’s Audi developed a power-unit problem early and toured home laps down after rejoining for data. Sergio Pérez ’s Cadillac never made the grid at all - a technical failure before the formation lap saw the car wheeled back, and he joined from the pit lane three laps late to run in formation at the rear. Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso also started from the pit lane after parc fermé setup changes.
The championship
Five points for Antonelli keep the lead at a heavy 53 over Lewis Hamilton , with Russell’s eight closing him to within three of the Ferrari. The math of the sprint is marginal; the message is not. Mercedes have now won four of the season’s five sprints, and Saturdays keep being the days the chasers can’t land a blow.
